As a child I grew up in the Baptist Churches on the southside of Chicago. For all of my adolescent life I was taught that speaking in tongues is one of many forms of gifts given by the holy spirit. Also that not everyone will speak in tongues. Some will have the power of healing, others the gift of prophecy etc. I was also taught that no one had to be around when you received it. Now as an adult, those things I was taught as a child has now changed. At 17 I started visiting churches of the Apostolic Faith, and their take on it is different. I was taught by them that when receiving the holy spirit for the first time you will speak it tongues. They told me how everyone in the bible spoke in tongues when they received the holy spirit. While they believe tongues is not the holy spirit it is the evidence that you have it. They also taught me that someone has to be around when the holy spirit is received and tongues are spoken. They do believe God can come whenever HE pleases but they also believe in bear witness. I know that Jesus spoke of not being able to bear witness of himself. That someone was always around when He did His great works. My mother in law brought up a good point about their being many different tongues and how not all are from God. I was taught someone needed to be around to bear witness because like Jesus we cannot bear witness of ourselves, because whose to say we are speaking in the tongues of God. My husband backed it up with a story of him at church and a woman being baptized and coming out of the water speaking in tongues. The pastor informed the congregation that it was the devil and he proceeded to cast it out while telling the congregation to get on their knees and pray. He was correct because the evil spirit let out a loud NOOOO!
I ask the Christians and lovers of Jesus Christ only.
What were you taught as a child? Does it differ from what you believe now?
Is tongues only a gift or does it need to be uttered once when receiving the holy spirit?
Can you be alone and bare witness of yourself when tongues are uttered?
I have read many post by pastors, ministers and true men and women of God and I value your thoughts. Please share scriptures that back your thoughts. I value it and welcome it.
